Landscape resulting from the extraction activity
Because the areas left behind by the extraction process are so radically different from their original look, previous to the extraction, it´s hardly surprising that through the years they have been described and valued in completely different ways.
A huge hole in the ground, an excavated spot that falls dramatically into the depths of the earth. Perhaps a wasteland, a dangerous area, empty of meaning, which might deserve to disappear under the rubble and into oblivion.
However, an artistic nature becomes apparent inside the quarry, which opens up the senses and draws one not sky-ward but into the earth architecture; this in an example of monumental sculpture excavated in a landscape where the stone has been carved with wisdom and the space has been modelled. One can only respect and admire this magnificent imprint of the work of humans, generation after generation.
