Lithica

Líthica is a non-profit private foundation that was constituted to save Menorca’s marés limestone quarries from landfills. These limestone quarries, excavated by stone cutters, are spectacularly beautiful and were about to disappear under piles of rubble. Since 1994, Líthica is in the process of completely overhauling the s’Hostal quarries Pedreres de s’Hostal. They have become a cultural and recreational area, while preserving their identity as quarry, spacious garden and labyrinth, and maintaining and disseminating the traditional use of stone in Menorca. The foundation’s aim is to uphold the quarries as heritage, an example of how man has shaped the countryside, The quarries are architecture in reverse, carved downwards into the rock and overgrown by trees and vegetation. The association became the Fundació Líthica-Pedreres de s’Hostal in 2012.
